ABSTRACT
Se realizó un estudio de intervención terapéutica para determinar la necesidad de prótesis dental en ancianos institucionalizados en Palmarito de Cauto, municipio Mella, durante el período comprendido de mayo a agosto del 2006. El universo constituido por 26 gerontes; a todos se les efectuó un examen bucal y se les aplicó un cuestionario sobre los temas que abordó la investigación, donde la caries constituyó la causa mayor de la pérdida dentaria. El grupo de edad que se observó con mayor frecuencia en la institución fue de 75 a 79 años y la prótesis total superior la que más se necesitó. Se recomienda extender el estudio a otros hogares ancianos y centros institucionales del país para satisfacer las necesidades de este segmento de la población(AU)
A therapeutic intervention study was performed to determine denture requeriments in old people who reside in a home for the elderly located in Palmarito de Cauto, Mella municipality, from May to August, 2006. The universe of study was 26 old persons who had oral examination and were questioned about the topics of the research study. Caries were the main cause of the loss of teeth. The 75-79 years age group was predominant and the upper denture was the most needed. It was recommended that this type of study be extended to other homes for the elderly and assistance centers of the country in order to meet dental needs of this population section(AU)
